PTSD

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a condition that affects individuals who have been through or seen a traumatic event.

Signs of PTSD

PTSD is identified by a spectrum of symptoms that fall into four primary categories:
  • Intrusive Thoughts: This includes constant, uninvited memories of the trauma, flashbacks, disturbing dreams, and severe reactions to things that recall the traumatic event

  • Avoidance: This manifests as steering clear of thoughts, feelings, or situations linked to the trauma, including avoiding places, people, or activities that bring back those memories

  • Mood and Thought Changes: Experiencing ongoing negative emotions, altered perceptions of oneself or others, feeling disconnected from people, and losing interest in previously enjoyed activities.

  • Altered Arousal and Reactivity: Symptoms can include being easily irritated or angered, trouble concentrating, an overly strong startle reaction, and issues with sleep.
It’s important to recognize that not everyone exposed to a traumatic event will develop PTSD. The development of this condition can depend on the trauma’s intensity, the individual’s support network, and any pre-existing mental health issues.
PTSD can arise from various experiences, including but not limited to:
  • Combat Exposure: Military members might face PTSD following combat or hazardous duties.
  • Assault: Individuals who survive physical or sexual assault could develop PTSD as a result.
  • Natural Disasters: Experiencing or witnessing natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, or hurricanes can trigger PTSD.
  • Accidents: Serious incidents, such as vehicular accidents, are potential causes of PTSD
  • Witnessing Violence: Observing acts of violence, either personally or in the community, can lead to PTSD.
